Embarking on a road trip across Florida is undoubtedly the greatest way to explore this state!

Featuring endless beaches, secret springs, plenty of dining options and countless attractions, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy.

Having a flexible means of transport will enable you to get the most out of your Florida road trip, so a personal car or campervan will make it easy for you to visit some of the best places that the Sunshine State has to offer!

This guide will take you through our 5 must-see destinations on a road trip across Florida.

1. Miami

A Florida road trip can never be complete without a stop in the cultural hub of Miami.

Miami is undoubtedly known for its beaches. In our opinion, you could easily spend an entire day in South Beach with all it has to offer including shopping on Ocean Drive, celebrity-chef restaurants and great night spots. Moreover, this city is one of the best destinations for Cuban cuisines, so be sure to stop at Calle Ocho to sample some Cuban food.

If you’re on a tight budget, we recommend booking your accommodation outside of South Beach as it’s more on the expensive side. Instead, check out more budget-friendly nearby vacation rentals and book one that suits your needs.

2. Sanibel Island

This picturesque island is definitely worth adding to your Florida road trip bucket-list with its beautiful beaches and breathtaking sunsets. It’s also a magnificent hub for wildlife, and a large percentage of the Island is a preserved wildlife reserve.

You could spend a day or two exploring this island as there are plenty of things to do here; from relaxing on the beaches and cycling around the island, to visiting the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. You can also head to Tarpon Bay by boat and see amazing wildlife like dolphins, birds, and manatees for yourself.

If touring on a tight budget, consider spending your nights in the trendy, yet more affordable Fort Myers town which is just a short drive from Sanibel Island and is great for beaches, family friendly events and shopping.

3. St Augustine

St Augustine is another destination to tick off your must-see tour list as there are numerous interesting places to visit and exciting things to do in ‘the oldest city in the US’.

You could drive to St. Augustine Alligator Farm and spend a few hours discovering the various kinds of alligators and feeding them, with additional viewing shows. With just $5, you can even take a photo with a baby alligator!

The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is another picturesque site worth visiting during your stay in St. Augustine. It’s beautiful grounds are loaded with history, and the drive to the park is also full of adventure thanks to the old oaks that cover the street.

You can close your day by driving to St. George Street, which has many classic restaurants. It is evident that St. Augustine is a fun destination for children too, as there are many family-friendly vacation rentals in this part of Florida, so be sure to book one in advance on Airbnb.

4. Orlando

Orlando is famous for its exciting and iconic theme parks such as Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios Orlando – so it’s a great getaway for thrill-seekers and fun for all the family to enjoy!

Walt Disney World is a brilliant choice of attraction as you can visit it’s various parks such as Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Typhoon Lagoon Water Park and Blizzard Beach Water Park!

Tip: There are also tons of affordable hotels and vacation rentals near the entry of the Disney Park, so be sure to book in advance.

If you’re a shopping enthusiast, Orlando has got you covered. This city has lots of state-of-the-art shopping complexes and outlets for any shopaholic to enjoy.

5. Cape Canaveral

Cape Canaveral is an absolute must for any Florida road trip as the Kennedy Space Center sits in this part of Florida. Visit this vast sprawling complex and familiarise yourself with the fascinating American space exploration history.

If you’re in luck and your visit coincides with a real rocket launch, then you’ll have the chance to catch the whole experience here. For an extra $30 for adults, you can share a table with a real astronaut over lunch!

During your trip to Cape Canaveral, consider staying at the Cocoa Beach region. This area has many options for budget-friendly restaurants, hotels, and vacation rentals. Moreover, it is just a couple of minutes’ drive from Cape Canaveral.

Florida has hundreds of amazing destinations, including beachside resorts, scenic theme parks, tropical islands, grand hotels, fully-equipped vacation rentals, and swampy marshlands.
