Bright lights, incredible talent and memories that last a lifetime. Welcome to New York City’s very own Broadway. Home to the most brilliantly choreographed shows and musical hits in the world, Broadway is a place unlike any other. Iconic stars such as Lea Michele, Kristen Chenoweth, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Matthew Morrison were made on Broadway.

The variety of Broadway shows is almost endless from Kinky Boots to Hamilton.

Broadway is a place for all ages. The Lion King is a favourite among children, Wicked is perfect for the musical-obsessed, and Phantom of the Opera is a moody delight for the adults. Truly, there’s a show for every age and interest.

Revivals, new musicals, plays, and every other kind of entertainment can be found on Broadway. By far, the longest-running Broadway musical is The Phantom of the Opera, with over 9,881 performances, and is still playing to this day!

Many shows don’t end on Broadway, they continue on to tour the country. Some casts and crews have travelled to all fifty states and abroad to share their talents. Newsies, Matilda, Wicked, Dirty Dancing, Hamilton, Into the Woods, Cabaret, Jersey Boys and Kinky Boots are some are all currently on tour.

The Great White Way itself has an immensely rich history. Did you know that the lights only dim on Broadway as a tribute? If a legendary actor or actress has died, the lights dim.

To ensure you have a stellar Broadway experience, here are a few faux pas To Avoid:

Eating during the show. Small snacks and mints are A-OK, but crunching and chewing will disrupt the other viewers enjoying the sounds of a Broadway pit orchestra
Using cell phones. Most theatres will ask that you place your phone on silent or vibrate, or turn off completely. If you must answer a call, retreat to the lobby of the theater falling asleep.

A cold theatre and the relaxing sounds of violins combine to make for a drowsy experience, it’s not too difficult to accidentally nod off now and again. If you think you’ll get sleepy, grab a coffee beforehand.

Post-Show Rituals:

If you’re interested in getting the autographs of the stars, head to the stage door to meet the cast after a performance. Not sure where the stage door is? Just ask someone who works for the theatre. Hanging out by the stage door is one of the coolest parts about going to a Broadway show. Be sure to bring your playbill for signing!
